What exactly are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are indispensable minerals that play a vital role in maintaining the body’s optimal functionality. They contribute to various critical functions, ranging from supporting the nervous system and muscle contractions to facilitating hydration and pH level regulation. Electrolytes are present in bodily fluids like blood, sweat, and urine. Common electrolytes encompass sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and others. This is why we often seek an additional boost of electrolytes following intense workouts or exposure to high temperatures.
Due to their positive or negative ionic nature, electrolytes conduct electricity when dissolved in water. This electrical conductivity enables them to perform crucial tasks such as transmitting nerve signals and aiding muscle contraction.*
All electrolyte powders are NOT created equal.
Unfortunately, some generic hydration supplements may contain sugars, calories, or artificial sweeteners. Some may not have the right balance of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
Choosing the best possible electrolyte formula all comes down to knowing what to look for and what to try to avoid so that you never waste your time or hard-earned money.
Here are the key factors to consider when searching for a high-quality electrolyte powder:
- Strong Nutrition Profile: It’s important to opt for an electrolyte supplement that has a nutrition profile backed by scientific research. More is not always better. Adding an extra 500-1,000mgs of Salt or 10+ grams of Sugar to your daily diet is very unhealthy and dangerous long-term.
- High Quality Ingredients: Prioritize an electrolyte supplement that has organic ingredients and uses research backed ingredients. Electrolyte powders with low quality ingredients will not be absorbed well by the body and can cause stomach issues. It’s important to select a product that has undergone rigorous third-party laboratory testing and is produced in a facility certified by Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). These measures ensure the product’s excellence and ensure it is devoid of undesirable additives like contaminants, traces of heavy metals, or pesticides.
- Fair Pricing: Many Electrolyte Powder brands way over-charge for their products to support their aggressive marketing strategies. Of all the powders we tested, Nectar has the highest quality ingredients (organic) and is the best priced – cheaper than any other option.
- Designed for the Normal Consumer: Many hydration powders have been designed for specific usages such as extreme hang-overs and endurance athletes. Theses products are not safe for daily use. In order to be optimally hydrated, you need an electrolyte supplement that is designed for daily usage.

LMNT is sugar free, has some quality ingredients and has a large number of reviews. But we found the product to be very over-priced and have an unhealthy amount of sodium for the average consumer. An extra 1,000mg of salt per day is dangerous to Cardio Vascular health.
Good
LMNT is a great choice for endurance athletes, but due to the unhealthy amount of salt, is not something we’d recommend for the normal consumer. If you are not performing intensive workouts daily, there are much better (and cheaper) electrolyte powder options.
Liquid IV is the top seller in the Hydration Powder market, but is not a product we’d recommend. The product is packed with sugar, very over-priced, and has a strong artificial taste. Don’t fall for the fancy marketing – this is not the best choice.
Ok
Customers love this brand, but it lacks many of the qualities necessary for us to recommend it. It is not healthy to consume the amount of sugar and salt in Liquid IV daily. Furthermore, the taste leaves a lot to be desired.
Good product, with really good dosing and quality ingredients, but didn’t make the top of our list because of the high price, poor taste and some negative customer reviews
Ok
Expensive for what you get. Hydrant is made with non-organic ingredients and should be priced lower than what it is. We also were not big fans of the taste which was very sour and hard to drink.
Cure is a relatively new player in the market and still has a lot of work that needs to be done. The product has a strange taste from the coconut base and lacks many of the nutrients of other players. Additionally the product is very expensive.
Bad
Some customers seem to think its OK, but we did not like the taste, nutrition profile or extremely high price.
